STATEMENT
DARIUS KUZMICKAS The coastline—could there be a more overused and clichéd metaphor for human existence? It's moody and temperamental, even without some heavy handed description of low or high tide. And yet, how many painters have lined its proverbial shores, both literally and figuratively attempting to wrangle some over obvious philosophical parallel between the power of the tides and the complications of human existence? So, then, what's so special about Darius Kuzmickas' artistic observations of so many shorelines? For one, his aim is more subtle; more diffused. Using pinhole photography, a practically prehistoric technique in this digital age, Darius relinquishes control, granting ultimate power to his subject matter, subtly reinforcing the immeasurable influence of our ever-changing horizon line. As the photographer, Darius determines the time of day, measures distances, sets up the angle and takes aim, but as with any lens-free pinhole shot, the outcome is often as surprising to the artist as it is to the casual viewer. Even more surprising is what these shots inspire. Excerpted from essay by Kelle Schillaci
