This is an easy 15 minute walk from any of the downtown hotels or convention center. Simply walk north along State Street, India Street or Kettner Blvd until you reach the Little Italy neighborhood. India is bounded on the east by State and on the west by Kettner and is considered the main drag of Little Italy, with many restaurants, bars, and shops to browse along the way. This is my Country: September 7 – October 20, 2007 Full Gallery: Inaugural group exhibition examining issues of identity. The exhibition will consider how, through a wide range of subjects and media, contemporary artists locate, interpret, and reveal the subtle nuances of identity—of a country or territory, a physical body or space, a gender or sex, an idea or belief, for example—and how these definitions have evolved beyond earlier constructs from the last 20 years. Artists include Chris Ballantyne, Chris Barnard, Miyoshi Barosh, Graham Caldwell, Cathy de la Cruz, Martin Durazo, Marcelino Goncalves, Laurel Nakadate, Andrew Schoultz, and Jason Sherry. Jason Sherry + Scott Horsley October 27, 2007 – November 24, 2007 Gallery One: New photo-based mixed media works and installation by 2007-2008 San Diego Art Prize nominee Jason Sherry, known for offering a fiercely satirical view of humanity, social and political history, religion and spirituality, heroes, villains and men in power, as well as monsters and aliens. Working like an anthro-archeologist, Sherry’s “ripped from the headlines” collages and mechanical sculptures have unearthed such cultural brain twisters as “the menstruating men of the Nile”, “the Wet/Dry Chickenfucker”, and "Johnny Depp Versus The Ancient Mystic Order of Freedom Fries". Gallery Two: Epic line drawings by UCSD MFA candidate Scott Horsley that explore the relationships between sex and violence, violence and absurdity, and absurdity and authority. There is an ever growing cast of characters, relationships, objects, settings and retroactive continuities that form the groundwork for large-scale battle scenes and reflections, both of and on, society and systems of control. PROJECTSpace: TBA JOE DARK SHADOW THEATER: Contemporary Puppet Videos, Art & Installations November 30, 2007 – December 29, 2008 Gallery One + Gallery Two: An exhibition of new and recent contemporary puppet videos originally conceived under the auspices of FussFactory and previewed as a one-night event at a high desert site near Joshua Tree in May 2007. ABOUT
From its inception to its launch in 2007 the mission of LUIS DE JESUS SEMINAL PROJECTS has been inspired by a clear and simple idea: that the genuine desire and purpose of any serious artist is to break new ground with his or her work. I believe this is as true today as it was 100 years ago when artists helped to radically alter the socio/political and cultural landscape by breaking free of institutional doctrines that dictated what—and how—they should create. Seminal Projects is committed to working with international artists of all media who are engaged with fresh and intelligent thought-provoking ideas, who are fearless in their beliefs and execution, and who are taking risks. It is our intention to provide artists a unique platform where ideas and concepts are manifested and realized—along with the support of collectors, institutions, and the public—through a program of consistently innovative, high quality, and conceptually rigorous exhibitions that serve to showcase the latest developments in contemporary art.
